Bio EN:Violinist Alexander Scherbakov has grown to recognition as one of the most captivating and musically gifted young performers of the pre-YouTube generation. An outstanding soloist, he is regularly invited to play in the music capitals of Asia, Europe and America. He spends each season combining concerto performances with recitals, sonata evenings and lectures, often collaborating with some of the worlds finest artists. Carrying a vast repertoire of concerto and recital works from early baroque to twentieth century, he attracts his audiences with a youthful but profound approach to some of the most beloved works of the violin literature and is considered unique in his gift for the romantic miniature.Alexander started playing the violin at the age of four and soon started attending a central Moscow music school. Under the tutelage of his mother, a violinist and teacher and his father, a world-renowned concert pianist, Alexander’s playing and musical appreciation developed quickly, all the while steeped in harsh realities of the Soviet regime. After the family moved to Switzerland in 1992, Alexander continued his instrumental studies with the former leader of the Zurich Tonhalle-Orchestra, Elemer Glanz. At the age of eleven in 1993, Alexander first competed in the International Citta di Stresa Competition in Italy, where he was granted third prize. In the following two years, he advanced to second and finally first prize at the same competition. Despite his natural intolerance for music competitions, Alexander later became finalist of the Brahms International Competition, Pörtschach, Austria, Fritz Kreisler Competition, Vienna, Michael Hill International Competition, Auckland, NZ.In 1995, Alexander started his formal musical education at the Purcell School of Music in London on a partial bursary basis. His first teacher was Dimitar Burov, two years later he joined the class of Prof. Detlef Hahn (student of Aldo Ferraresi and Zino Francescatti) at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and soon won the 1998 Guildhall string competition Lutine Prize. During his London years Alexander took further private instruction from Prof. Zakhar Bron, Prof. Evgueni Bushkov, Felix Andrievsky, Vladimir Spivakov and Gerhardt Schulz. In 1997, "Decca" produced his first CD with the Purcell School Symphony Orchestra. Later that year, the LYRA Foundation, Vontobel Bank and the Max-Hussman-Foundation, Zurich, who have since supported his exceptional talent for half a decade on two continents, awarded him with further scholarships. In 1998, to the delight of local music critics and to the apprehension of his father, who accompanied him during the concert, Alexander gave his debut recital at the "Bregenzer Festspiele" in Austria. In 1999, Alexander performed for HRH Prince of Wales and the Royal Family at a charity Gala evening in Windsor Castle under Sir Roger Norrington. In January 2000 he performed Mendelssohn’s Double Concerto with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra under Howard Griffiths and was later featured in a concert of “Musik an der ETH” season together with the great German actress, Maria Becker.Throughout his education, Alexander participated in festivals such as Margess International – Switzerland; International Masters Seminar, Prussia Cove – England; International Master Classes – Vienna; Pacific Music Festival 2000 – Japan. Despite not heavily focusing on chamber music performance, he has enjoyed making music with numerous chamber music partners, which, amongst others, included: cellists Leonard Elschenbroich, Benjamin Nyffenegger, pianists Dmitri Demiashkin, Wilhem Latchoumia, Yevgeny Sudbin and clarinetist Shirley Brill.During his performing career, Alexander had the honor of working with conductors such as Michael Tilson Thomas, Sir Roger Norrington, Charles Dutoit, Sir Simon Rattle, Justus Frantz, Wen-Pin Chien and John Williams in concerts around the world.Awarded a full, merit-based scholarship in 2000, he continued his studies at the Eastman School of Music of the University Rochester, NY with Prof. Oleh Krysa (student of David Oistrakh) and received valuable chamber music instruction from the Ying String Quartet. At the beginning of his program at Eastman, Alexander had the honor of becoming first and only freshman in the history of the school to lead the Eastman Philharmonic Orchestra from the concertmaster position under Maestro Mandy Rodan. In spring 2002 he also enrolled in the "Advanced Musicianship Studies" program at the Thornton School of Music, University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where he could pursue his studies due to the grant awarded by the school upon special request of his future professor, the legendary Alice Shonfeld (student of Karl Klingler, an heir of the great Joachim tradition). While in Los Angeles, Alexader performed on numerous concert stages including the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Alfred Newman Hall, Universal Studios and the Rotary Club of California. His concerts were broadcast live on USC Classical Radio while a number of non-classical CDs, tracks and live performances with Will Smith, Hans Zimmer and other mainstream artists have been produced.Returning from the United States, Alexander played throughout Eastern Europe with most of the Romanian Philharmonic orchestras, amongst others: Timisoara Philharmonic, Cluj Philharmonic, George Enescu Philharmonic - Bucharest. This was the first of many tours to be organized and promoted by his future wife, pianist Madalina Slav.Touring the original version of J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 on a rarely heard piccolo violin in Germany and Holland with the Philharmonic of the Nations and appearing in venues such as the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Dr. Anton Philip Hall, The Hague, Berlin Philharmonic, Wolfsburg Volkswagen Plant, Vlissingen and Utrecht, Alexander has found a mentor and supporter for life in Maestro Justus Frantz, with whom he continues his collaborations until today and has formed a unique friendship. Alexander was also the assistant conductor of the Philharmonic of the Nations. After his final return from the US, Alexander briefly studied under Prof. Nora Chastain in Zurich (ZHdK), but the relationship was not to last. In spite of the threats to expel him from the Conservatoire over not attending an orchestral summer course, the young violinist went on his first tour of New Zealand, performing with his future wife Madalina in Auckland, Queenstown, Taihape, Palmerston North and Wellington, where he was later invited to take part in the Wellington Festival with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.Alexander Scherbakov has received Swiss citizenship in 2005 and was based in his home canton of Zurich until 2009, when he moved his family to the rural countryside of canton Thurgau away from the agitation of big cities. He is married to the pianist, composer/arranger and concert manager, Madalina Slav, who is not only his trusted chamber music partner since over two decades, but also the director of the Slav Arts concert agency. As a dedicated teacher he held appointments at the “Musikathelier” Affoltern am Albis (Zurich), the “Musik Hug” school in Zurich, the “Begabtenförderung” (program for gifted students of the canton of Aarau) at the Muri Highschool of Music and has since, with increasing frequency, been invited to hold masterclasses in Europe and Asia. In 2007 he travelled to Australia and Tasmania by invitation of the Hobart University to perform and give master-classes and seminars, speaking about the Russian violin school of Leopold Auer and inspiring the next generation of Australian violinists for the values of musical training. In 2008 he was invited to give his first recital in Bangkok and lecture at the Srinakharinwirot and the Mahidol Music Universities. Ever since he has become a frequent guest. 2019 has seen him teaching and performing at the Music Universities of Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, Jakarta, Sichuan, Shanghai, Beijing, Soul, Kyoto and Osaka. A tour which, for the most part was scheduled to be repeated in the summer of 2020. Currently, Alexander holds a private class of violin students in Zurich, frequently achieving top places in national and international competitions.Over the last decade Scherbakov has numerously performed the Mozart, Brahms, Shostakovich, Bruch, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Saint-Saens and Bach violin concertos in collaboration with orchestras such as the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Czech National Symphony Orchestra, G. Mahler Jugendorchester, Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Siam Sinfonietta of the Philharmonic Orchestra, Penang Philharmonic, National Symphony Orchestra of Malaysia, Philharmonic of the State Iasi, Botosani Philharmonic, Oradea Philharmonic, Sibiu Philharmonic, Georges Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra Filarmonica di Torino, Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali, Orquestra Classica do Sul, Orquestra de Camara de Caiscais e Oeiras, Orquesta Clasica Santa Cecilia Madrid, Orquesta Filarmonica de Buenos Aires - Teatro Colon, Fremont Symphony, American Youth Symphony, New West Symphony and many others.Due to cancellations across the board since January 2020, plans to focus on teaching became more prominent following an invitation by the Feirang International Institute of Music, Beijing to take on a full-time professorship. Scherbakov has also been asked to give a TEDx lecture in Florida at the UFL School of Music on performance and the music industry for instrumentalists.Following his life-long obsession with the solo violin works of J.S. Bach, Scherbakov wanted to share his passion by playing the complete works in 12 churches of small communities of the Swiss canton of Thurgau in 2010. The concerts were held in memory of the great Yehudi Menuhin who also performed the masterpieces in Swiss mountain villages during the war 70 years earlier.Invited to perform in festivals around the world i.e. Carinthian Summer - Austria, Bermuda Festival, Festival Internacional de Musica da Sao Caetano do Sul Scherbakovs concerts are often unprecedented and therefore quickly sold out, as one New Year’s concert of Gershwins “Porgy & Bess”, transcribed by Hollywood’s Alexander Courage with the Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra at the Romanian Athenaeum, where the hall administration had to provide additional standing places to fit the audience.Collaborations with this and numerous other orchestras including the Zurich Symphony, Bavarian Radio and the Concertgebouw Orchestras, have seen Scherbakov on a twenty-concert, European tour of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, which, amongst others, included appearances at the Fribourg Festival, the Munich Herkulessaal and the Birmingham Symphony Hall. With support of the PartnerRe group in 2005-06 Alexander Scherbakov was able to initiate his own virtuoso string orchestra with which he appeared as soloist and conductor in Switzerland. Performances included the Bern Cathedral, Abendmusiken Sils Maria, Music Summer Weggis, Festival “Wengen Sommerkonzerte”, a fundraising concert in support of Ethiopias children for “Menschen fur Menschen” – Zurich Tonhalle, “Geheimtipp am Mittag“, - Helferei Zurich with live concert broadcasts for DRS2 and Radio Suisse Romande, Espace 2 in the Studio Ansermet in Geneva. Continuing to broaden his experience as conductor, Alexander became assistant to David Stern, then principal conductor of the Saint Gall Symphony.Scherbakov was invited to give seven chamber music concerts and solo recitals within the Davos Festival, where the press response: “…impeccable technique!”, “...celestial” has been exhilarating. A following G. Enescu recital tour of Madrid, Paris, Berlin and Lisbon started with a concert for the opening of the George Enescu Society season in London. The Scherbakov-Slav Duo had the unique opportunity to be invited lecturers and live aboard the exclusive and much rumored seagoing celebrity residence "The World” by ResidenSea, where they gave a memorable New Year’s recital at sea, followed by a Guinness World Record fireworks display in Funchal, Madeira.A 2009 recital tour took Alexander to Portugal where he performed in venues such as the prestigious “Casa da Musica” in Lissbon or the Museu Nogueira de Silva in Braga for the joint celebrations of the National day of Romania and Independence Day of Portugal. Critical acclaim of one evening compared Scherbakovs interpretation of Sergei Prokofievs Violin Sonata to that of David Oistrakh.A further highlight was the 2011 invitation by the Argentine conductor Jorge Uliarte to play the Saint-Saens violin concertos at the Ushuaia Music Festival “Fin del Mundo” as well as at the renowned Teatro Colon in Buenos-Aires with the Buenos-Aires Philharmonic Orchestra.Scherbakov is the founder of the biennial Bischofszell International String Competition, fully supported and funded by the cantons of Thurgau and St. Gallen since its initial 2011 edition, promoting highest international levels of artistry in a rural setting.
